Tips for making these cookies
- Make sure the butter is soft and eggs are at room temperature.
- Do not over-mix the cookie dough or it will result in tougher, drier cookies.
- Be sure to chill the dough at least 30 minutes. Longer if it is still soft.
- Roll the dough out on a well-floured surface.
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper! This is a must or the candy centre will melt and stick to the pan.
- Do not over bake or candy centre will burn.
Decorative Cookie Techniques

Stained Glass Valentine Cookies
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups butter room temperature
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 2 eggs + 1 egg yolk
- 3 3/4 cups all purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 40-50 red hard candies such as lifesavers or Jolly Ranchers
Instructions
- Sift together flour, baking powder and salt.
- Using electric mixer beat the butter and sugar until fluffy, about 5 minutes.
- Add the vanilla and eggs. Combine well.
- Add the flour mixture a bit at a time, blend until combined.
- Separate the dough into 3 disks, wrap with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
- When ready to bake preheat the oven to 350º F.
- Crush hard candies into small bits. I place the candies in a heavy ziplock bag and pound with a mallet.
- Line cookie sheets with parchment paper. You must use parchment paper or the candy will stick and make a mess!
- On lightly floured working surface roll the cookie dough to 1/4 inch thickness.
- Using a large heart-shaped cookie cut the dough, then using a smaller heart-shaped cookie cut dough out of large heart shape.
- Place the cookies on the parchment lined cookie sheet.
- Fill the centers with crushed candies, be careful to not spill any crushed candies onto the cookie dough.
- Bake for 8-10 minutes. Just until the edges start to brown.
- Cool completely before removing from cookie pan.
